After A Hurricane

INSURANCE

When you know that a hurricane is coming, it is important to understand what is covered under your homeowners insurance and what isn’t.

  • Damage caused by wind, wind-driven rain and water is covered by your home insurance.

  • Auto insurance will pay for flood-damaged cars. You can read more about how to protect your car here

  • Understand the rules of fallen trees on your property and your neighbor’s property.

  • Many homeowners policies will pay for additional living expenses such as rent, food, etc. for up to a year while you’re unable to live in your home.

  • Be sure to document and take pictures of any damage for your insurance company. They prefer that you do so before you place tarps down.

  • If you do not have any insurance, check the FEMA website and find out how you can be covered. Type your address in DisasterAssistance.gov to find out about any aid in your area.

  • Floods are the nation’s most common and costly natural disaster, and cause millions of dollars’ worth of damage each year.

  • Most insurance does not cover flooding. It’s always smart to check with your insurance company first to see if you are covered but more often than not, you will have to buy flood insurance.

  • Be sure to read up on how you can be safe. Visit The National Flood Insurance Program to get all the information you need.
